Sales

Does your pipeline produce predictable revenue, or depend on you?

Improve your sales process, pipeline, conversion rates, customer management and the predictability of your revenue.

A business with a defined sales process can forecast, train and improve. One that relies on the owner’s instinct can only react.

What this pillar examines

Six areas that decide whether the business can carry the next stage of growth, or whether something has to change first.

  • Pipeline visibility

How much business is genuinely in play, at what value, and how long each stage really takes.

  • Conversion

Where deals are won and lost, and which stage of the process is quietly costing you the most.

  • Follow-up discipline

What happens between first contact and decision — the part of selling most businesses leave to memory.

  • Quoting and pricing

How proposals are built, delivered, chased and reviewed, and how often they are discounted without discussion.

  • Customer management

Whether the relationship sits with the business or inside one person’s head and inbox.

  • Revenue predictability

Whether next quarter can be forecast from evidence, or only estimated from optimism.

Why it matters to sustainable growth

Most owners know their monthly revenue. Far fewer can say how it was produced: how many enquiries arrived, how many converted, how long each stage took, and where the lost ones went quiet.

Without that picture, sales performance looks like a personality rather than a process — and a personality cannot be improved, delegated or repeated. Forecasts become opinions, and hiring decisions become guesses.

A working sales process is simply a set of defined stages, the evidence that moves a deal forward, and a named owner for each stage. It does not require sophisticated software. It requires being written down, measured and followed.

If you cannot describe how a deal is won, you cannot explain why one is lost.

Practical guidance

General good practice rather than a substitute for professional advice on your own circumstances — but a sound place to start before you run any of the tools.

  1. 01

    Define your stages

Write down the stages a deal passes through and what has to be true before it leaves each one. Vague stages produce vague pipelines, and vague pipelines produce wishful forecasts.

  2. 02

    Measure conversion at each stage

Count enquiries, qualified conversations, proposals and orders. You can only improve a stage you can actually see.

  3. 03

Give every enquiry a defined response

A stated response time and a fixed follow-up sequence. Most lost business goes quiet rather than being refused — which means it was never really lost at all.

  4. 04

    Review lost business properly

Record the reason, not the story. The same reason appearing repeatedly across a quarter is usually a message, targeting or pricing problem rather than bad luck.

  5. 05

Make the process repeatable without you

Write it so somebody else can follow it, then check that proposals and follow-ups are consistent whoever sends them.

  6. 06

Work the pipeline back from the target

To deliver a revenue target, calculate the enquiries needed at every stage, using your own conversion rates. Then you know whether you have a plan or a hope.

Where this sits in the framework

Sales is pillar 03 of four. The framework suggests working from finance upwards, because each pillar depends on the one before it — but every pillar stands alone, so you can start wherever your most pressing question is.
