Marketing

Are you reaching the right customers with a message they understand?

Understand your ideal customers, sharpen your market positioning and communication, generate better leads and measure what works.

Marketing works when it is specific. The clearer you are about who you serve, what problem you solve and why you are the better choice, the less you have to spend to be understood.

What this pillar examines

Six areas that decide whether the business can carry the next stage of growth, or whether something has to change first.

  • Ideal customer definition

Moving beyond industry labels to the problem, the buying trigger and the alternatives your customer actually considers.

  • Positioning and differentiation

What you are chosen for, and why that would still be true if a competitor copied your pricing tomorrow.

  • Message clarity

Whether one consistent, credible message reaches the market across every channel you use.

  • Channel choice

Whether effort is spread thinly across familiar channels or concentrated where your customers actually are.

  • Lead quality

The difference between volume and fit — and what each enquiry costs you to generate.

  • Measurement

Cost per enquiry by channel, and what happens to each lead after it arrives.

Why it matters to sustainable growth

Most marketing underperformance is not a channel problem. It is a clarity problem: too many audiences, several versions of the same message, and activity chosen because it is familiar rather than because it works.

Marketing also has no independent existence. Its job is to feed a sales process that can convert what it produces. If the sales side cannot handle the volume, more leads simply add cost and administrative noise.

That is why marketing sits last in the MSOF sequence. Once finance and operations can support growth and sales can convert it, marketing becomes the safest place to invest — because every additional enquiry has somewhere sensible to go.

Being clearer about who you serve is cheaper than being louder about what you do.

Practical guidance

General good practice rather than a substitute for professional advice on your own circumstances — but a sound place to start before you run any of the tools.

  1. 01

Define the customer worth most effort

Go beyond sector labels to the specific problem, the buying trigger and the alternatives they accept today. Specificity is what makes the rest of the plan work.

  2. 02

    Position against the real alternative

Most prospects are comparing you with doing nothing, or with their existing supplier — not with a perfect competitor. Position against what they would actually do instead.

  3. 03

    Say one thing, consistently

Agree the core message and use the same version on the website, in proposals, in sales conversations and in every campaign. Consistency compounds; variety confuses.

  4. 04

Choose two channels and go deep

Two channels worked consistently will usually beat five worked occasionally. Depth also produces the evidence needed to judge what is working.

  5. 05

    Price your leads properly

Track cost per enquiry by channel and what those enquiries convert into. A cheap lead that never buys is the most expensive lead you have.

  6. 06

Give the funnel something specific to convert into

A defined offer with an obvious next step will outperform an invitation to make contact every time.

Where this sits in the framework

Marketing is pillar 04 of four. The framework suggests working from finance upwards, because each pillar depends on the one before it — but every pillar stands alone, so you can start wherever your most pressing question is.
